Fibres of medical fabrics

Why are the right medical fabrics crucial?

Fabrics for medical clothing must withstand extremely demanding conditions that you will not encounter in any other industry. In everyday work, medical staff make hundreds of movements in a short time, often working in haste, under stress and in an environment of elevated temperature. The materials used in professional medical clothing must therefore combine durability, safety, comfort and high resistance to chemical and mechanical damage.

Hygiene is also crucial in medical facilities. Scrub tops, coats, tunics and trousers are washed multiple times – often daily – at temperatures up to 95°C. Such an intense care process eliminates microorganisms but at the same time places a huge strain on the material. For this reason, high-quality medical fabrics must be resistant not only to temperature, but also to detergents, virucidal and bleaching agents. A fabric that does not meet the required standards may lose colour, pill, shrink or deform after just a few washes – and this disqualifies it in a medical environment.

Skin comfort is equally important. Staff wear their clothing for many hours a day, so the material must provide comfort during movement, prevent overheating and wick moisture away effectively. Breathability and softness are extremely important in intense working conditions such as operating rooms, dental surgeries, emergency departments or physiotherapy units. In such environments the temperature is often higher and the pace of work exceptionally fast – in these situations, a comfortable fabric has a direct impact on staff comfort and their effectiveness.

Modern medical fabrics are designed to combine technical durability with user properties that improve everyday comfort. High-quality materials:

  • retain the colour and structure of the fabric even after long-term use,

  • have dimensional stability – they do not shrink or stretch,

  • are resistant to pilling and intensive abrasion,

  • ensure safe contact with the skin and do not cause irritation,

  • allow freedom of movement regardless of body position,

  • guarantee appropriate breathability and thermoregulation.

Thanks to this, clothing made of certified fabrics – such as polyester–cotton, polyester–viscose, blends with elastane or 100% medical cotton – retains a professional appearance, does not deform after washing and supports workplace hygiene. This is particularly important in professions such as nurses, doctors, paramedics, physiotherapists, laboratory diagnosticians or care staff. In these professions, clothing is not only an element of identification, but above all a work tool.

That is why at ModernBHP we use only fabrics that meet European medical standards, tested in terms of durability and safety. Every material, before it enters production, must undergo multi-stage quality tests – resistance to washing, abrasion, light, moisture, stretching, as well as tests confirming the absence of substances harmful to the skin.

Types of medical fabrics

At ModernBHP, we use four main groups of materials that respond to different needs of medical staff and the specific nature of work in healthcare facilities. Each fabric stands out with unique technical parameters, a different level of durability and a different wearing comfort. This way, selecting the right material makes it possible to create medical clothing tailored to work intensity, hygiene requirements and the aesthetic expectations of medical professionals.

Polyester–cotton fabrics are considered the most commonly used in the medical industry, as they combine high durability with good breathability. The polyester part of the fibre strengthens the material and increases its resistance to pilling, stretching and damage during industrial washing. The cotton provides softness and thermal comfort, making it an ideal material for large medical facilities where clothing must withstand intense use every day.

Polyester–viscose fabrics are distinguished by their elegance and lightness, which is why they are mainly used in representative garments. Viscose gives the fabric softness and a smooth drape, and also provides a pleasant cooling effect on the skin. It is an excellent choice for the beauty industry, dentistry, private clinics or cosmetology practices, where not only comfort but also aesthetics and the professional appearance of the staff matter. The addition of polyester increases the durability and resistance of the material while maintaining its natural breathability.

Increasingly popular are polyester–viscose–spandex fabrics, created in response to the growing demand for medical clothing that adapts to the figure and movement. Thanks to the added elastane, the fabric stretches in all directions, does not deform even after many hours of wear and ensures full freedom when performing dynamic activities. It is an ideal choice for physiotherapists, operating room nurses, paramedics and all specialists who work in a rhythm that demands flexibility and fluid movement.

On the other hand, 100% medical cotton is a material valued by those who prefer natural fibres, especially when working in elevated temperatures or in conditions that strain the skin. Cotton is breathable, delicate and excellent at wicking moisture, which makes it perfect for long shifts and work in warm rooms. Its great advantage is the possibility of dyeing it in many colours, including classic medical white, pastel tones and more intense shades. This fabric is particularly recommended for coats, shirts, tunics and summer sets.

Each of the above-mentioned materials has been designed to meet the specific needs of modern medical facilities. The choice of the right fabric depends on the degree of clothing use intensity, hygiene requirements and the level of comfort that the outfit must provide to the employee during long hours of work. A common feature of all fabrics used by ModernBHP is that they meet European standards and have been tested for durability, skin safety and dimensional stability.

In addition, modern fabrics used in medical clothing must combine functional properties with aesthetics. The appearance of the staff is gaining importance, so fabrics should maintain colour intensity, not fade under the influence of light and retain an elegant look even after many washes. That is why we choose materials that are resistant to disinfectants, detergents and frequent washing cycles that do not deform the fibre structure.

Polyester–cotton medical top

Polyester–cotton medical fabrics

Polyester–cotton fabric is one of the most commonly used materials in the medical industry, as it combines the durability of synthetic fibres with the comfort of natural cotton. It is an excellent solution for large medical facilities, where clothing is exposed to intensive use and frequent washing at high temperatures. This material is characterised by an exceptionally stable structure, so it does not stretch, shrink or lose its original shape even after many washing cycles at 60–95°C.

The combination of polyester and cotton creates a fabric that is both breathable, easy to care for and resistant to mechanical abrasion. Cotton provides natural skin comfort – the material is pleasant to the touch, breathable and does not cause irritation, which is particularly important during long shifts. Polyester, on the other hand, strengthens the fabric, increasing its lifespan, resistance to tearing and the action of disinfectants used in healthcare.

Polyester–cotton fabrics tolerate washing in industrial laundries very well, where high temperatures and strong detergents are used. Thanks to the stability of the fibres, colours remain intense and the structure of the fabric does not deform. This is especially important for garments worn daily by medical staff – scrub tops, trousers, coats and nursing uniforms.

This material is also characterised by low crease tendency, which makes it much easier to keep clothing neat and professional without the need for frequent ironing. This is a huge advantage in an environment where convenience and quick preparation for work are essential. At the same time, the fabric remains soft and sufficiently flexible, ensuring comfort of movement – regardless of the activities performed, including bending, lifting patients or working under time pressure.

Due to its properties, polyester–cotton is chosen both by hospitals and outpatient clinics, private clinics, dental practices and laboratories. It is a versatile material that works well in almost every element of medical clothing: from classic tops and trousers to tunics and protective coats.

Clothing made of this fabric meets hygiene requirements, is durable, aesthetic and comfortable even during intensive, long hours of work. This is why polyester–cotton remains one of the most trusted and proven materials in the medical industry – especially where resistance, functionality and reliability are crucial.

Polyester–viscose medical fabrics

Polyester–viscose fabric is one of the most valued materials in the medical industry, especially in facilities where aesthetics, delicacy of the fabric and high wearing comfort are important. Viscose gives the fabric exceptional softness and a natural, elegant sheen, so garments look professional, stylish and modern. It is a material that combines functionality with elegance – ideal for staff working in private practices, aesthetic clinics, dental surgeries and the beauty industry.

Viscose, being a cellulose fibre, provides excellent breathability and exceptional smoothness, making garments made of this material very pleasant to the touch and comfortable even during long working hours. The natural breathability of the fibres helps maintain the right body temperature, which is especially important when working in warm rooms, treatment areas or environments with high activity.

The addition of polyester reinforces the structure of the fabric and increases its resistance to frequent use and contact with detergents. Thanks to this, clothing made from a polyester–viscose blend retains its appearance for a long time – it does not stretch, shrink or fade after washing. This makes these fabrics much more practical in everyday use than traditional natural fibres, while remaining soft and lightweight.

Crease resistance is one of the key advantages of this blend. The material looks neat almost immediately after drying, which significantly reduces the time needed to prepare garments for work. This is particularly appreciated by staff working at a fast pace, where there is no time for time-consuming ironing and appearance must remain flawless.

Thanks to its properties, polyester–viscose fabric works perfectly in slim-fit scrub tops, tunics, medical dresses or modern sets dedicated to the beauty industry. It is a fabric chosen by people who expect a refined look and high comfort while maintaining practicality and durability.

Viscose also gives the material excellent drape – the fabric falls lightly and elegantly, does not form stiff creases and highlights the natural lines of the figure. This makes clothing made from this material look exceptionally professional and aesthetic, which translates into a positive perception of the staff by patients.

Thanks to the combination of softness, breathability and durability, polyester–viscose fabrics are an excellent choice wherever aesthetics, working comfort and high garment quality are a priority. It is a material that perfectly fits the requirements of modern medical clothing, combining comfort, style and functionality in one.

Elastic medical top with spandex

Polyester–viscose–spandex fabrics

Elastic medical fabrics with the addition of spandex are the most modern and technologically advanced group of materials used in contemporary premium medical clothing. Designed for people who work in constant motion, these fabrics combine outstanding elasticity, softness and resistance to deformation. As a result, clothing made of polyester–viscose–spandex not only provides freedom of movement, but also a perfect fit to the body and very high comfort throughout the day.

The addition of spandex (elastane) makes the fabric stretch in every direction – not only lengthwise, but also crosswise – which translates into full mobility and eliminates the feeling of stiffness typical of traditional workwear fabrics. Clothing made from this blend does not bag at the knees or elbows, does not stretch permanently and always returns to its original shape after washing. This is a key feature especially for modern slim-fit models that require high fabric elasticity.

Viscose in the composition is responsible for pleasant smoothness, breathability and a slightly cooling effect, which you will appreciate during dynamic, long shifts. Thanks to it, the skin overheats less and the material remains naturally breathable. This is a huge advantage for medical staff, physiotherapists, radiologists, dentists or massage therapists – wherever comfort and freshness are just as important as functionality.

Polyester, in turn, increases the material’s resistance to stretching, everyday use and frequent washing. Thanks to this, medical clothing made from this fabric looks modern and elegant, while maintaining its form even after many washing and disinfection cycles. The stronger fibre structure also protects against colour fading – outfits made from this fabric remain intense and aesthetically pleasing for a long time.

This combination of three fibres is particularly recommended for premium medical clothing, fitted models, sporty jogger-style trousers and slim-fit sets. The material perfectly accentuates the figure while not restricting movement and ensuring full comfort even in the most demanding working conditions.

An additional advantage of polyester–viscose–spandex fabrics is their pleasant, slightly matte appearance, which gives clothing a professional character. The fabric does not shine, is not see-through and looks great both in practical dark colours and in pastel or more daring shades. This makes garments made from this blend meet both the functional and aesthetic requirements of the modern medical sector.

As a result, polyester–viscose–spandex fabrics are an excellent choice for those who are looking for clothing that is comfortable, durable, elastic and elegant at the same time. It is a solution created for work in motion – when comfort, professional appearance and fabric reliability throughout the day matter.

100% cotton medical fabrics

100% medical cotton is the most natural, breathable and skin-friendly material used in medical clothing. Its exceptional properties make it indispensable wherever comfort, freshness and user safety are a priority. It is a fabric particularly valued by people with sensitive skin who work many hours in changing conditions – from warm rooms to heavily air-conditioned surgeries.

Pure cotton provides natural air circulation, allowing the skin to breathe freely and moisture to be drawn away. This breathability is exactly why cotton garments perform so well during long shifts, procedures or physically demanding work. The fabric remains comfortable even at elevated ambient temperatures, making it an ideal choice, among others, for nurses, rehabilitation specialists, dental assistants and care staff.

Another advantage of cotton is its softness and hypoallergenic nature. The natural structure of the fibres is extremely pleasant to the touch and does not cause irritation, so clothing made of cotton can be worn even directly on very sensitive skin. It is also a recommended material for people with allergies and those who do not tolerate synthetics or overheat easily at work.

100% cotton also stands out for its ability to be dyed in a very wide range of colours – from classic, sterile medical white to pastel, saturated or deep, elegant shades. This allows cotton clothing to be matched to the visual identity of the facility or the individual preferences of the employee. Despite its natural origin, the fabric is durable and withstands regular washing, retaining an aesthetic appearance for a long time.

Although cotton is more demanding in care than synthetic blends, many medical professionals appreciate its unbeatable comfort, natural character and thermoregulatory properties. This fabric is perfect for tunics, shirts, coats and lightweight medical clothing, where breathability and skin contact with the material play a key role.

It is an excellent choice for people who want to feel free, fresh and fully comfortable at work – regardless of their position or how intense their day is.

How to choose the right medical fabric?

Choosing the right medical fabric has a huge impact on staff comfort, garment durability and how well it suits the specifics of everyday duties. Each type of material offers different properties, so it is worth selecting it consciously, depending on the intensity of use, facility requirements and employee preferences.

  • polyester–cotton – ideal for people looking for maximum durability, resistance and easy care. This is the most commonly chosen fabric in hospitals and clinics where clothing must withstand frequent washing, disinfection and long hours of wear. It provides solidity, dimensional stability and excellent lifespan.
  • polyester–viscose – the best choice for those who focus on elegance, softness and comfort. Viscose gives garments a subtle sheen and exceptional lightness, and thanks to its breathability it works perfectly in private practices, dental clinics, the beauty industry and premium services.
  • polyester–viscose–spandex – a fabric created for modern cuts, ensuring elasticity, freedom of movement and excellent fit. Ideal for active professionals: physiotherapists, nurses, paramedics or anyone who values comfort and mobility. It maintains its shape even under intensive use.
  • 100% cotton – the best solution for those who value naturalness, breathability and full skin comfort. It performs particularly well in warm rooms and for sensitive skin. The material is breathable, soft and very user-friendly, although it requires slightly gentler care.

When choosing the right material, it is worth considering the nature of the work, ambient temperature, preferred cut and durability requirements. Thanks to ModernBHP’s extensive range, everyone can choose a fabric that suits their needs – from hospital clothing and premium medical sets to elegant outfits for private clinics.
